" 'Swan Lake' It Isn't " Dance of the Blue-Footed Booby
|
The unique form and curious courtship ritual of the Blue-footed Booby have captivated me ever since I first saw photos of them in
International Wildlife. Since then I have researched them in numerous books, enjoyed many videos of them in the Galapagos,
and studied their skins at the Denver Museum of Science and Nature. Part of the courtship “dance” involves “sky-pointing”
(pointing their bills at the sky), while lifting and flashing their big blue feet in front of the prospective mate. It isn’t particularly
elegant, and may look downright awkward and comical to us humans – but to the Booby it is a very serious business indeed!
I hope my sculpture captures, along with the awkwardness and humor, my total delight in this seabird’s amazing form and
behavioral characteristics.
