"On The Road With Mother Goose"
|
“On The Road With Mother Goose” was a project I could not resist doing. It incorporates three of the major passions of my life:
animals, literature, and art. It is also a tribute to mothers, and teachers, everywhere… who, as mine did, instilled in their children
a love for the adventure, fun, and learning to be found in good books. It is hoped that this sculpture will inspire children to use their
imaginations, and come up with their own interpretations about the activity depicted. What is the baby gosling (or is it the Ugly
Duckling?) saying to Mother Goose? And where are they going? And why is Tommy Town Mouse sleeping next to the books?
The baby could be asking, “Are we there yet?” Or he could be saying “I want to get down now!”, or “Look out… don’t step on that
mouse!” It is entirely up the viewer’s interpretation, and that is half of the fun. Even the brooch on the front of Mother Goose’s
shawl depicts a lovely swan; could that be her aspiration?
I feel this is the ideal sculpture for any venue where children gather in the spirit of learning and fun; a park, library, school, or
museum. It could also be a source of healing and inspiration in a hospital, or just a delightful addition to a home sculpture garden.
The patina can be altered to best fit the needs of the purchaser. The ribbons can be virtually any color, as can the flowers on the
hat and the base. And I can offer suggestions regarding possible means for raising funds for the purchase of this sculpture, if
desired.
This piece is designed for public, outdoor installation, with steel supports in the legs for added strength and security. It is sized to
be readily accessible for children, yet is large enough for adults to appreciate as well. Ideally, it will be displayed on some type of
pedestal approximately 16 – 20 inches in height.
