Most of the time, my hens lay their eggs, and vacate the nesting box immediately. In the summertime, however, some of the hens
will get "broody", and attempt to incubate their eggs - and anyone else's as well! Once the urge to mother a brood of chicks takes
over, the hens become very protective of their eggs, and will soundly peck any hands trying to remove those eggs from the nest. It
is a form of maternal instinct, and I respect it ... and find it quite endearing.
