“Charlie” is one of my beloved pet roosters; handsome, comical, and affectionate. All of my chickens are kept penned to protect them from predators, so they don’t have an opportunity to range widely to hunt bugs. Every now and then, we catch a bunch of grasshoppers and release them in the pen – and the fun begins. The roosters cackle and call their hens to the feast. Some of the chickens run right up and grab them, others like “Charlie” run up and “freeze” in position prior to “nabbing” the ‘hopper. This frozen position is what I attempted to capture. Please use your imagination for “the bug…” "Charlie and the Bug" won the AVMA Award (American Veterinary Medical Association) at the International Exhibition on Animals in Art at Louisiana State University. "The sculpture appeared on the June cover of the AVMA Journal.
