| "Avian Sunshine" |

Spring in our area is heralded by the arrival of the birds. The first arrivals are the male bluebirds,
followed by the meadowlarks – which brighten the mornings with their songs. Then gradually we
witness the return of the robins, the phoebes, the swallows, and the goldfinches. The goldfinches flock
to our feeders and the surrounding shrubs, looking like bright little bits of avian sunshine. I had done
this little goldfinch as part of a commission to be installed in a park up in Illinois, and decided that
perhaps this little bird would stand alone as a sculpture… a cheerful representation of one of my
favorite little passerine visitors.
